ENMU Men’s Soccer Team Wins Its First SSC Game of the Season Over St. Mary’s

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — Unable to overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit, Eastern New Mexico University lost 5-2 to St. Mary’s University on Sunday, Oct. 30 in a Southwest Soccer Conference match. The Greyhounds dropped their overall record to 4-14-1 and their SSC record to 2-11-0. The Rattlers, 3-0 winners in the first meeting on Sept. 9 at ENMU Soccer Field, improved to 6-9-0 overall and 4-8-0 in the SSC.

Eastern was outshot 29-12 in the game, 13-6 in shots on goal. St. Mary’s took the lead on a goal by Luke Smith as he took a pass from Jonathan Gray at the 8:52 mark. Less than three minutes later (11:49), the Rattlers took a 2-0 lead as Kris Sumter put the ball through the net, unassisted. In the final seconds of the first half (44:49), Aron Ruiz provided an assist for Logan Snyder’s winning goal and a 3-0 halftime lead.

ENMU came out strong in the second half to get within two goals of SMU on an unassisted goal by Jonathan Holman (So., F, Rio Rancho, NM/rio Rancho HS). Holman’s fourth goal of the season ties him with Jared Morris (Fr., F, Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) and Keith Vargas (Jr., F, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) as team leaders in goals scored. Holman’s team-leading seven assists gives him top honors with 15 points for the Greyhounds.

At the 64:58 mark, Sumter connected on his second goal of the game and Gray recorded his second assist in the match for a 4-1 lead. Eastern cut into the lead at the 75:50 mark on a goal by Matt Thomas (Jr., M, Roswell, NM/College of the SW), his first of the season. Just undr four minutes later (79:49), SMU closed out the scoring on a goal by Ben Barling off an assist by Scott Kilpatrick.

Eastern’s final game of the 2005 season will be on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Greyhounds are scheduled for a 2 p.m. MST match against West Texas A&M University.
