Box Score

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS — Eastern New Mexico University took a 1-0 lead, then lost the next two games, before winning the final two games in a 3-2 Lone Star Conference victory over Angelo State University on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Junell Center. The Zias won the match, 30-17, 15-30, 21-30, 30-28, 15-11, as they improved their overall record to 6-10 and evened their LSC South record at 2-2. The Rambelles dropped to 9-11 overall, 1-4 in the LSC South.

Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) led the ENMU attack with a career-high 29 kills. She nearly had a perfect match, with no hitting errors on her way to an impressive .630 hitting percentage. Her kill total is believed to be the most in one match without an error in ENMU history.

In Game #1, Eastern never looked back after breaking a 4-4 tie. Kristi Britain (Sr., OH, Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS), who missed Eastern’s 3-0 loss at Abilene Christian on Thursday (Oct. 6) due to a student-teaching commitment, recorded the first kill of the ASU match, on her way to four kills in the opening game. Schiely led the team with six kills in Game #1, while also earning one service ace and one block assist.

Angelo State came to life in the second and third games. The Rambelles coasted to victory in Game #2, behind seven kills by Amber Smith. In the third game, Smith led ASU again, as she provided three service winners, including two to begin the game. Lindsay Huling recorded four kills in Game #3, helping ASU build a 2-1 lead in the match.

Eastern needed to win the fourth game, but the Zias found themselves down by as many as seven points on several occasions. A kill by Angelo’s Tess Brindock gave the Rambelles their last seven-point lead at 18-11. Eastern slowly got back in the game and pulled within one point, 23-22, following consecutive kills by Schiely. At 26-24, a kill by Britain and an ace by Schiely tied the game.

The teams traded points on the next four possessions. With the score tied, 28-28, Eastern’s Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) and Rhea Wortman (Fr., OH, Prineville, OR/Crook County HS) provided back-to-back kills to tie the match at 2-2.

The Zias trailed only once in the final game, 1-0, which they answered with five consecutive points for a 5-1 lead. The Rambelles answered with four straight points for a 5-5 tie, but ENMU moved back in front. Kills by Schiely, Britain and George in conjunction with a ball-handling error and two attack errors by ASU, gave ENMU an 11-7 lead.

Angelo State called a timeout and scored three points in a row when play resumed to pull within one at 11-10. Eastern scored the next two points on kills by Schiely and George, then went up 14-10 when Schiely and Marcie LeGrand (Jr., RS, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) blocked an attack by Katieann Stevens. The Rambelles scored
the next point on a kill by Stevens, before Schiely provided another kill to end the match.

Schiely’s 29 kills and six block assists were team highs for the match. She also earned two service aces to tie for the team lead. George provided 13 kills, while Britain added nine and Wortman recorded eight. Wortman also earned 16 digs and contributed two service aces. Kathryn McCannell (Jr., S, Brandon, MAN, Canada/Bemidji State University) led the team with 32 assists and Kara Killian (Fr., S, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) recorded 23 assists. Vanessa Wilcox (Fr., OH, Houston, TX/Kempner HS) led the Zias with 24 digs.

Eastern was solid defensively, with 13.0 team total blocks on 20 block assists and three solo blocks. ASU held an 80-66 advantage in digs, but the Rambelles finished the match with just one team block.

Brindock provided 58 assists and 11 digs, while Natalie Crow paced all players with 25 digs.

Eastern returns home for an LSC match against arch rival West Texas A&M University on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. MDT. The Zias will be on the road Oct. 14-15 in Denton, Texas, for the second LSC Crossover Tournament of the season.
