ENMU Can’t Capitalize on a 2-1 Lead in a 5-Game Loss To SE Oklahoma

DENTON, TEXAS — In the final match of the 2nd Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament, Eastern New Mexico University lost 2-3 to Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Zias lost all four matches they played in the tournament and dropped their record to 6-14 overall. The Lady Savages recorded their first-ever win over ENMU and improved to a 14-12 overall record in the 30-26, 25-30, 22-30, 30-24 and 15-9 win.

Down 1-0, Eastern came roaring back in games two and three for its first match lead in the tournament. Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) got the Zias going in the second game with a kill and a lead they would not relinquish. SE Oklahoma got within one at 23-22, but were outscored 7-3 down the stretch. Kristen Van Wettering (Jr., OH, Portales, NM/Portales HS) was instrumental as she provided three kills in Eastern’s final eight points of the victory.

Game three was tight as neither team led by more than two points leading to a 19-19 tie. A kill by Rhea Wortman (Fr., OH, Prineville, OR/Crook County HS) gave Eastern the lead for good at 20-19. Eastern outscored SE Oklahoma 11-3 behind another kill by Wortman and kills by Marcie LeGrand (Jr. RS, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) and Schiely. Four Zia blocks in the stretch led to seven attack errors by the Lady Savages as Eastern took a 2-1 match lead.

Eastern had a few one point leads early in game four, but gave up the lead for good at 5-6 on an attack error. The Lady Savages controlled the game the rest of the way leading by as much as seven points on a couple of occasions as they tied the match at two games apiece. In the fifth game, Eastern had its last lead at 7-6 on a kill by Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS). SOSU’s Amber Jay was effective as she provided three kills leading to the victory. Olivia Franceskini led the Lady Savages on offense with 27 kills.

Four Zias recorded double-digits in kills, led by George’s 22 with a .348 hitting percentage. Van Wettering recorded her second best career-performance with 10 kills for the Zias. Her career best came on Sept. 30, 2003 in her freshman season when she recorded 13 kills against Lubbock Christian University. Wortman had 15 kills, while Schiely provided 14 kills and a team leading 10 blocks. Eastern handed out 60 assists in the match as Kara Killian (Fr., S, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) provided 25 assists, one more than Kathryn McCannell (Jr., S, Brandon, MAN, Canada/Bemidji State Univ.)

ENMU returns to Greyhound Arena for a non-conference match against Oklahoma Panhandle State University scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Eastern travels to Canyon, Texas on Thursday, Oct. 20 to take on LSC South foe West Texas A&M University at 6 p.m. MDT.
