Tarleton State Wins Final Two Games of a 3-1 Victory over ENMU

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — In its final road game of the season, Eastern New Mexico University lost the final two games in a 3-1 defeat to Tarleton State University on Saturday, Oct. 29 in a Lone Star Conference South Division match. The Zias lost 26-30, 31-29, 25-30 and 21-30 and dropped their overall record to 7-18, 2-6 in the LSC South. The TexAnns improved their record to 16-15 overall and 2-7 in the LSC South.

The match was statistically closer than the score, as the Zias managed 67 kills and the TexAnns recorded 69 kills. The difference in the match came down to Zia errors on their attacks and difficulty with handling the TexAnns’ serve. Eastern had 33 attack errors, while Tarleton committed 25 errors. ENMU gave up eight service aces and was able to record only three aces. Tarleton was more effective on its attacks with a .224 hitting percentage, while Eastern had a .165 hitting percentage.

The TexAnns were led by Desiree Reed with 24 kills and a .351 hitting percentage. Christina Ortiz had 58 assists and Amy Rice led the defense with 10 blocks. Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) led the Zias on offense, as she has done all season, recording 20 kills and a .300 hitting percentage, to go along with five block assists. Junior Grace George (MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) was effective with a .294 hitting percentage on her way to recording 13 kills and a team-leading eight blocks. Two other Zias had double-digits in kills, including Rhea Wortman (Fr., OH, Prineville, OR/Crook County HS) with 14 and 11 by Kristen Van Wettering (Jr., OH, Portales, NM/Portales, NM), who added five blocks.

Eastern returns home for the final two matches of the season, beginning on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. MST against Angelo State University. The Zias will wrap-up their 2005 season on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. MST against nationally ranked and LSC South leader Abilene Christian University.
