ENMU Head Coach Mike Maguire Gets His 400th Career Victory, 3-0, Over Panhandle

PORTALES, N.M. — In his 20th year as a collegiate head coach, Mike Maguire recorded his 400th career victory in Eastern New Mexico University’s 3-0 defeat of Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias won 30-19, 30-17 and 30-23 as they improved their overall record to 7-15. The Lady Aggies remained winless in the 25 matches they have played this season.

The Zias were not challenged in the match, as they recorded a .300 team hitting percentage. Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) was perfect on the attack, recording 19 kills, no errors and a .731 hitting percentage. Amber Davis (Sr., Colorado Springs, CO/Dodge City CC) was also perfect on the right side as she didn’t commit a single error on her way to nine kills and a .643 hitting percentage. Schiely led the team with five blocks and Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) recorded four blocks and five kills. Freshman Eileen Henry (S, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) recorded her first kill of her career in the third game.

Kathryn McCannell (Jr., S, Brandon, MAN, Canada/Bemidji State Univ.) led the Zias with 20 assists and Kara Killian (Fr., S, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) provided 15 hand outs. The Lady Aggies were led by Katie Denning with nine kills and 15 hand outs by Molly Woodhall.

Coach Maguire’s milestone was primarily reached at ENMU where he has lead the volleyball program for the past 19 years. He began the 2005 season ranked 16th in victories among active coaches in the NCAA Division II. He has a career record of 400-223 and is 385-238 at Eastern. On three occasions, Maguire has been named LSC Coach of the Year, 1991, 1993 and 1995. He was also selected the 1999 LSC South Division Coach of the Year and has led the Zias to two LSC regular season championships. Last season, ENMU qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Eastern will be in Canyon, TX to take on LSC South rival West Texas A&M University on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. MDT. After a week off, the Zias travel to Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Oct. 27 and visit Tarleton State on Oct. 29.
