ENMU Rallies for 2-1 Victory over Angelo State
Dozier Nets Goal, Adds an Assist; Rosa Scores Winner at 88:20

Box Score

PORTALES, N.M. — Jessica Rosas (Sr., F, Escondido, CA/Cochise CC) provided the winning goal at 88:20, on an assist from Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS), as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Angelo State University, 2-1, on Friday, Oct. 7, in a Lone Star Conference game at the ENMU Soccer Field. The Zias improved to 8-4, the best start in the three-year history of the program, while improving to 1-1 in the LSC. The Rambelles fell 5-7-1 overall and to 2-2 in the LSC South.

After a very physical first 45 minutes of play, the score was knotted up at 0-0. Eastern was called for 11 fouls and ASU was whistled for five fouls during the first half. Less than two minutes into the second half, at 46:12, the Rambelles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rebecca Akingbolagun, who hit a shot from 12 yards after receiving a pass from Marianne Glutz.

Glutz was ejected from the game at 62:00 in an altercation with Valerie Noreiga (Sr., MF, El Paso, TX/Cochise CC) who received a yellow card. Angelo State played with just 10 players on the field following the ejection.

Eastern quickly took advantage of having an additional player. After breaking through the defense on a pass from the midfield, Dozier tried to shoot past Angelo’s goalie, Becky Martin, just over seven minutes after Glutz left the game. Martin made a stellar save, but Dozier grabbed the rebound and kicked the ball into the net from 15 yards out to tie the game 1-1 at 69:20.

The winning goal occurred on a breakaway by the Zias. Dozier attacked on the left side and passed from 16 yards out to an on-rushing Rosas, who scored the winning goal from seven yards.

Sixteen seconds later, ASU’s Tina Nikkila received her second yellow card of the game, forcing her to the bench for the remainder of the contest. The Rambelles attempted to come back, but were down to only nine players on the field following the two ejections.

Stephanie Sanchez (So., GK, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) recorded the win and improved her record to 5-4 this season. She faced six shots on goal and registered four saves, while improving her goals against average to 2.06.

Rosas recorded her second goal of the season and Dozier’s goal was her third of the year. Dozier was credited with her team-leading sixth assist on the winning goal Eastern was efficient on offense, taking just six shots, but placing five on goal. ASU had 11 shots, with six headed toward the target.

Eastern will wrap up its five-game homestand on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. MDT against Midwestern State University. The Zias will travel to Ada, Okla. on Friday, Oct. 14 for an LSC match against East Central University. ENMU will stay on the road, travelling to Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Sunday, Oct. 16.
