ENMU’s Dozier Records A Hat Trick, As 2 Zia Goalies Shut Out East Central, 4-0

Box Score

ADA, OKLA. — The solid play of goalies Stephanie Sanchez (So., Belen, NM/Belen HS) and Amy Holtman (So., Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) led Eastern New Mexico University to a 4-0 shutout victory over East Central University on Friday, Oct. 14 in a Lone Star Conference game. The Zias improved to a school-best 10-4 overall record and a 3-1 record in the LSC. The Lady Tigers dropped to 2-11 overall and remain winless in the LSC with an 0-5 record.

Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS) got Eastern on the board with what turned out to be the winning goal at the 35:16 mark. Dozier’s cross to the right from 5 yards came off a pass from Nicole Bregler (So., M, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS). Less than three minutes later, Valerie Noriega (Sr., M, El Paso, TX/Cochise CC) passed to Dozier who turned and shot from 25 yards for her second goal of the game. Dozier recorded her second career hat-trick, hitting a cross from the right side from 13 yards out off a pass from Jennifer Goodrum (Sr., M, Ogden, UT/Weber State Univ.). Anna Funck (Jr., M, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) wrapped up the Zia scoring by connecting on a penalty kick at the 73:34 mark.

Dozier doubled her goal total for the year and with six goals is just behind Funck’s team-leading eight goals. Bregler recorded her second assist of the year, while Noreiga increased her assist total to three and it was Goodrum’s second assist.

ENMU is in serious contention to make into the LSC Tournament for the first time in school history. The Zias are in their third year of competing in women’s soccer and stand in third place in the LSC standings.

Eastern remains in Oklahoma for a game against Northeastern State University on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Tahlequah.
