ENMU’s Rosas Provides Winning Goal in OT, as Zias defeat Midwestern State, 1-0
Eastern Improves to 9-4 Overall, 2-1 in the LSC

Box Score

PORTALES, N.M.Jessica Rosas (Sr., F, Escondido, CA/Cochise CC) scored the only goal of the game in overtime, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Midwestern State University, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 9 in a Lone Star Conference matchup. The Zias improved to 2-1 in the LSC and to 9-4 overall, equalling last year’s victory total. The Lady Indians dropped to 2-2 in the LSC, 4-6-1 on the season.

The winning goal was scored at 96:54. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Bregler (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) started the play with a move away from defenders near the sideline. She then passed the ball to Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS), who was just inside the penalty area. Dozier free herself from a defender and passed to Rosas, who sent the ball into the net from 16 yards out. Rosas’ kick was perfectly placed over the outstretched arms of MSU goalie Elli O’Dwyer and into the upper left corner.

Eastern was outshot, 18-5, by Midwestern, including 6-3 in shots on goal. Rosas recorded her third goal of the season, while Dozier earned a team-leading seventh assist. Bregler provided her first assist of the season.

Rosas also scored the winning goal on Friday (Oct. 7) in Eastern’s 2-1 win over Angelo State University. Her goal against ASU was scored at 88:20 on a shot from seven yards out.

On Sunday, ENMU had to overcome being called for 17 fouls, while Midwestern State was whistled for only four fouls. Goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez (So., Belen, NM/Belen HS) of ENMU improved her record to 6-4 this season with her second shutout. Although Eastern was outshot, most of MSU’s opportunities were not on goal and did not challenge Sanchez.

With the victory, Eastern has won four consecutive matches for the team’s longest winning streak in its short three-year history. The Zias have won six of their last seven matches, and have put themselves in a position to challenge for an LSC Tournament berth.

Eastern will travel to Ada, Okla. to take on East Central University in an conference game on Friday, Oct. 14. The Zias will conclude their weekend on the road with a match against Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., on Sunday, Oct. 16.
