Greyhounds Rout Colorado Christian, 9-0
Jonas, Vargas, Gallegos each Score Two Goals

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team earned a decisive 9-0 victory in its home opener against Colorado Christian University on Friday, Sept. 2. Bryan Jonas (So., D, New Braunfels, TX/Canyon HS), Keith Vargas (Jr., F/MF, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) and Martin Gallegos (Jr., MF, Roswell, NM/Roswell HS) each scored two goals. It was Eastern’s first win of the season, as the Greyhounds improved to 1-2 overall. Colorado Christian dropped to 1-3 on the season.

At the 4:21 mark, the Greyhounds opened the scoring when sophomore midfielder Ryan Atkinson (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) put the ball into the net from eight yards out on an assist from Rob Humphrey (So., F/MF, Moriarty, NM/Fort Lewis College). CCU was able to remain within one goal until Bryan Jonas hit the first of his two goals at 38:56, with an assist credited to Jonathan Holman (So., F, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS).

Jonas struck again with less than a minute left in the half, as he headed the ball into the net on Humphrey’s second assist of the game. ENMU held a 3-0 lead at the break.

The Greyhounds increased their lead at 52:26, when Vargas redirected a pass from Rhen Salas (Fr., MF, San Antonio, TX/Judson HS) and headed the ball past CCU goalie Andrew Kurtz from seven yards out. At 63:55, Vargas scored his second goal of the game from 10 yards out. Andrew Perez (So., MF, San Angelo, TX/Lake View HS) and Brian Schonberger (Sr., MF, Clovis, NM/Clovis HS) received assists on the play, as Eastern increased its lead to 5-0.

ENMU scored its next three goals in a 4:52 span. The first goal was at the 71:00 mark, as Schonberger recorded his second assist of the game by providing Jared Morris (Fr., F, Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) with an easy shot from in-close on the right side. Just 22 seconds later, at 71:22, Gallegos sent the ball into the goal on an unassisted play. At 74:52, Schonberger scored his second goal on a tap-in from three yards, as Morris was credited with an assist. Eastern capped the scoring at 85:38, on an unassisted goal by Gallegos.

ENMU goalkeepers Leif Craddock (So., Amarillo, TX/West Texas A&M University) and Josh Tinaglia (Fr., Littleton, CO/Heritage HS) each played 45 minutes to split the shutout. Craddock recorded one save in the first half, while Tinaglia was not called on to make any saves in the second half.

The Greyhounds remain at home for the next four games, starting with Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2:30 p.m. MST. West Texas A&M University will visit the ENMU Soccer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m MST. Eastern will complete its homestand with games on Sept. 9 and Sept. 11, against the University of the Incarnate Word and St. Mary’s University, respectively.
