Zias Open LSC South Play with 3-0 Win over Tarleton State

PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s volleyball team opened Lone Star Conference South Division play with a 3-0 win over Tarleton State University on Thursday, Sept. 29 at Greyhound Arena. ENMU won the first two games easily, 30-20 and 30-21, but had a tougher time in the third game before claiming a 30-28 victory. The Zias, playing in only their third home match of the season, improved their overall record to 4-8 while moving to 1-0 in the LSC South. The TexAnns dropped to 8-7 overall and remained winless in the LSC South with an 0-3 record.

Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) led the offensive attack for Eastern in the first game with four kills. Kristi Britain (Sr., OH, Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS), Amber Davis (Sr., MB, Colorado Springs, CO/Dodge City CC) and Rhea Wortman (Fr., OH, Prineville, OR/Crook County HS) each provided two kills, as Eastern took its largest lead of ten on the winning point. The solid offensive performance was made possible by Kara Killian’s (Fr., S, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) five assists and Kathryn McCannell’s (Jr., Brandon, MAN, Canada/ Bemidji State) three assists.

The Zias came out strong in Game #2 and took a 12-5 lead. A 6-1 run by the TexAnns cut
the lead to 13-11. Eastern answered with five consecutive points, featuring two kills and two service aces by Wortman. ENMU eventually increased its lead to a game-high 28-12, as Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) provided five kills and two block assists in the win.

After the intermission following the second game, Tarleton won the first four points in the third game. Facing its largest deficit of the match at 8-3, Eastern went on an 11-6 tear to tie the game at 14-all behind four kills from George. Marcie LeGrand (Jr., RS, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) recorded one of her five kills in the match, and added her second block assist of the game, as the Zias took a commanding 27-20 lead. TSU made a gallant effort to stay in the match, getting within one point at 28-27 and 29-28, before losing on a kill by Schiely off an assist from McCannell.

Davis led the Zias with a .462 hitting percentage, providing 13 total attacks and seven kills, while only committing one error. Killian finished with a team-leading 17 assists, just one assist in front of McCannell. George, Schiely and LeGrand provided solid defensive play with four block assists each. George recorded the only solo block of the match for the Zias and finished with an impressive .429 hitting percentage. Schiely ended the match with 11 kills.

ENMU remains at home for the next two matches. The Zias will take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville in LSC South play on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. MST. Eastern concludes its longest homestand of the season — three matches — on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. MST in a non-conference match against Lubbock Christian University.
