Three Zias Score in Home Opener, as Eastern defeats Colorado Christian, 3-2

PORTALES, N.M.Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS), Anna Funck (Jr., M, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) and Kara Henderson (So., D, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) each scored a goal in the 2005 home opener for Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team, leading the Zias to a 3-2 win over Colorado Christian University on Friday, Sept. 2. The Zias improved to 2-1 overall, while the Cougars dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Just 8:16 into the first half, Dozier took a pass from Funck and knocked in a goal from 14 yards out for a 1-0 ENMU lead. A little over two minutes later, at 10:23, Funck took advantage of a misread by a Cougar defender on a corner kick to score from 10 yards out for a 2-0 ENMU lead. Funck’s earned her second assist of the game at 25:44 on a pass to Henderson for an eight- yard goal that capped off Eastern’s scoring.

CCU began to rally at the 38:34 mark with a goal by Kim Secrest off an assist by Alexia Price. With two minutes remaining in the half, the Cougar’s Price cut Eastern’s lead to 3 2 when she took a pass from Laura Leathers and scored from 10 yards out.

In the second half, Eastern’s defense held CCU to only five total shots. Meanwhile, the Zia offense kept the ball away from ENMU goalie Amy Holtman (So., GK, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) by taking 10 shots during the half. For the game, ENMU achieved an 18-11 edge in shots, including a 9-7 margin in shots on goal.

Funck finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Dozier’s goal was her second of the year. Dozier’s first goal came in a 2-1 overtime win against Mesa State College on Aug. 27.

ENMU will remain in Portales, N.M., for its next match, set for Sunday, Sept. 4 at 12 p.m. MST against Colorado State University-Pueblo. The homestand will continue with a match against University of the Incarnate Word on Friday, Sept. 9, and will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 11, against St. Mary’s University (Texas).
