ENMU Wins Third Game in a Row with 2-0 Triumph over CSU-Pueblo
Funck Scores both Goals

Box Score

PORTALES, N.M.Anna Funck (Jr., M, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) scored both goals in a 2-0 Eastern New Mexico University win against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday, Sept. 4 at the ENMU Soccer Field. The Zias won their third match in a row to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Thunderwolves lost for the first time this year and now own a 3-1-1 record.

After earning one goal and two assists in Eastern’s win on Friday, Sept. 2, against Colorado Christian University, Funck got Eastern on the board with a goal at the 29:54 mark of the first half against CSU-Pueblo. Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS) and Jessica Rosas (Sr., F, Escondido, CA/Cochise CC) were credited with assists, as the Zias took a 1-0 lead.

It was Funck again in the second half (53:17), taking a pass from Kara Henderson (So., D, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Ranch HS) and sending the ball into the net for a 2-0 Eastern lead. It was Henderson’s first assist of the season, as she provided Funck with an easy tap-in from two yards.

Eastern’s three-game winning streak is the second in the team’s short history. The Zias’ first set of three consecutive wins was recorded by the 2004 team (Sept. 17-24) in ENMU’s second season of competition.

Zia goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez (So., Belen, NM/Belen HS) was able to shut out the Thunderwolves. She recorded five saves and faced 16 shots in her first shutout of the season.

Funck leads the Zias with three goals and has added two assists. She is tied with Dozier for the team lead in assists. Dozier has scored two goals and trails Funck by one goal for the team lead. Last year, both players were Second Team All-Lone Star Conference selections.

ENMU will remain at home to take on University of the Incarnate Word on Friday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. MST. The Zias will complete their four-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. MST against St. Mary’s University (Texas).
