ENMU Shuts Out UT-Permian Basin, 3-0

PORTALES, N.M. — Stephanie Sanchez (So., GK, Belen, NM/Belen HS) and Amy Holtman (So., GK, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) combined for a shutout in goal, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated the University of Texas-Permian Basin, 3-0, in a non-conference women’s soccer game on Friday, Sept. 30, at the ENMU Soccer Field. Sanchez and Holtman each played 45 mintues for the Zias, who improved their season record to 6-4. The Falcons dropped to 3-6 this season.

Valerie Noreiga (Sr., M, El Paso, TX/Cochise CC) gave Eastern a 1-0 lead at the 38:56 mark, taking a pass from Anna Funck (Jr., M, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) and putting the ball into the net from 25 yards out. ENMU’s defense was solid, holding UTPB to only two shots, none on goal, in the first 45 minutes of play. Eastern remained in front 1-0 lead at halftime.

At the 75:45 mark, Kara Henderson (So., D, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) scored into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Henderson currently is second on the team in goal scoring, as she trails only Anna Funck (Jr., MF, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS), who has five goals. Jessica Rosas (Sr., F, Escondido, CA/Cochise CC) provided her second assist of the season, giving the Zias a 2-0 lead.

Less then 10 minutes later, Nicole Bregler (So., M, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) took advantage of a misplay by Falcon goalie Lauren Riggs to give the Zias a 3-0 lead. The unassisted goal came at the 83:04 mark, as Bregler recorded her third goal of the season.

Eastern outshot UTPB, 30-2, during the game. The Zias held a 13-0 margin in shots on goal.

ENMU will play the third match of a five-game homestand on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. MDT against the College of the Southwest. Eastern will return to Lone Star Conference play on Friday, Oct. 7 against Angelo State University at 3 p.m. MDT. The Zias will wrap up the homestand on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. MST against LSC foe Midwestern State University.
