ENMU Drops Opener, 5-1, Wins Second Game, 6-2

Box Score - Game 3 - ENMU 1, ACU 5
Box Score - Game 4 - ENMU 6, ACU 2

ABILENE, TEXASRosemary Moreno (Sr., RHP, Midland, TX/Midland College) threw a four-hitter to lead Eastern New Mexico University to a 6-2 win in the second game after dropping the opener 5-1 against Abilene Christian University on Saturday, Apr. 1 at Wells Field in a Lone Star Conference South Division double-header. The Zias, who split the four-game series at ACU, remained in second place in the LSC South with an 8-4 record and are 28-14 overall. The Lady Wildcats maintained their place atop the LSC South with an 11-3 record and a 29-10 overall record.

Moreno gave up only one earned run to improve her team-best record to 15-5 this season. The Zias took a lead they would not relinquish in the third inning of the second game on a lead-off solo homer by Tina Whitt (Sr., C, Riverside, CA/Midland College). Eastern added three runs in the fourth inning on a Kelsey Kubik (Jr., RF, Tucson, AZ/Pima College) two RBI homerun and a sacrifice fly by Whitt that drove in Tracy Jordan (Sr., 2B, Rosamond, CA/Desert HS) from third base. An RBI double by Jade Wilson got the Lady Wildcats on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. ENMU added a couple of runs in the top of the seventh on Elizabeth Whipkey’s (So., 1B, Orange, CA/Villa Park HS) two-RBI single. ACU was able to take advantage of a three base error in the bottom of the inning to score an unearned run before Moreno finished the Lady Wildcats off for the win.

Natasha Lindsey (Sr., RHP, Auburn, WA/Tusculum College) and Amanda Nightingale (Sr., RHP, Mesquite, TX/North Central Texas College) split the pitching duties in the first game loss. Nightingale threw the final three innings, shutting out ACU while giving up only two hits. Lindsey was credited with the loss and dropped her record to 8-6. Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Zias tied the game in the second on an RBI-double by Kubik. In the third, an RBI-double by ACU’s Wilson and a three-run homer by Nicole Deel provided Jennifer Leal with the runs she needed to record her 17th win of the season against only two defeats.

Whitt’s homerun ties her with Jessica Nocas (Sr., SS, Riverside, CA/Midland College) for a team best eleven homeruns. Both players are also tied for the school record for most homers in a season shared with Nikki Gay in 2003 and Rachel Mohler in 2000.

Eastern returns home for a weekend LSC South series against Texas Woman’s University. The first double-header of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 7 at 12 p.m. MST. The teams will wrap up the series on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 12 p.m. MST.
