ENMU Outscores Colorado Mines, 12-9
Greyhounds Rally from 3-0 Deficit with Nine Runs in Bottom of Third Inning

The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with nine runs in the third inning, then held off a comeback by Colorado School of Mines in the eighth inning, as the Greyhounds defeated the Orediggers, 12-9, on Friday, Feb. 10 at Greyhound Field. ENMU remained undefeated at 5-0. CSM fell to 1-3.

After the Orediggers tallied three runs in the top of the third inning, the Greyhounds responded with eight hits, including four doubles, in the bottom of the stanza. Gilbert Alvarado (Sr., LF, Roswell, NM/New Mexico State University) hit two singles during the inning, while Justin Gee (Sr., RF, Clovis, NM/Clovis HS), Jeff Roemer (Jr., 1B, Woodbury, MN/Rochester Community and Technical College), Tyler Brown (Sr., C, Aurora, CO/Arapahoe CC) and Ryan French (Sr., CF, Carlsbad, NM/Trinidad State JC) each recorded a double.

ENMU added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to extend the lead to 11-3. Kelton Hayes (Jr., DH/1B, Guthrie, OK/Northlake CC) scored the run in the seventh with a leadoff homer, his third home run of the season. Colorado Mines rallied with six runs in the eighth inning, but ENMU relief pitcher Keith Balderaz (So., RHP, Monahans, TX/Monahans HS) faced just three batters in the ninth inning to record his second save of the year. ENMU starter Kelly Crain (Sr., RHP, Gordon, TX/Gordon HS), who pitched into the eighth inning, improved to 2-0 with the win.

The Greyhounds are 5-0 for the first time since the baseball program was revived at ENMU for the 1992 season. ENMU has scored 63 runs in its first five games, while recording 13 home runs to match the team total for the entire 2005 season. The Hounds and Orediggers will play two more games on Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 12 p.m. MST, followed by a single game on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. MST.
