When Phil Clabaugh came to Eastern New Mexico University as the head baseball coach in the spring of 1991 he had the challenge of building the ENMU baseball program from the ground up literally. Before the first practice of the reborn Greyhound baseball program could take place Clabaugh had his players outside building a field from the ground up. Clabaugh has not only built a field, but a team that has been a strong competitor in Lone Star Conference.
The Greyhounds finished second in the LSC in 1994, and remained in the race for the 1997 title and the 2000South Division crown until the final week of the season. ENMU earned a 34-19 overall record in 1996. Clabaugh, originally from Woodward, Okla., recorded his 100th win at ENMU on Feb. 10, 1996 against Cameron University and his 300th collegiate career win on March 14, 2000 against his Alma Mater, Oklahoma Panhandle State University. In his 13 seasons at ENMU, Clabaugh is 293-375-2.
Over his 17-year collegiate career, he is 389-510-3. Several players competed in professional baseball after playing for Clabaugh at Western New Mexico. They were Brad Brooks (Minnesota Twins, 1989), Pat Maxwell (Cleveland Indians, 1991), Lauro Felix (Milwaukee Brewers, 1991), and Alex Kuhn (Atlanta Braves, 1991). Clabaugh earned his bachelor's degree in English and master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. He and his wife, Helen, have two adult children Sarah and Seth. |
