JAVELINAS EDGE GREYHOUNDS
Kingsville Defeats ENMU, 2-1 and 4-3
KINGSVILLE, TX The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas won a pair of low scoring Lone Star Conference games over the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds on Friday (Apr. 16), defeating ENMU 2-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the second game. The wins improved the Javelinas to 15-29, 5-9 in the LSC South Division. Eastern dropped to 19-27, 4-8 in the LSC South.

ENMU freshman starter Luz Leal, Jr. (LHP, Laredo, TX/Alexander Magnet H.S.) limited the Javelinas to 7 hits and just 2 runs in the first game, but the Greyhounds managed just 3 hits on offense. TAMUK starting pitcher Ricky Sandate threw a complete game, striking out 6 batters, to improve to 3-4. Leal fell to 3-4.

Eastern’s Corey Heredia (Jr., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Lamar C.C.) hit a double to lead off the sixth inning. It was the game’s only extra-base hit. Heredia later stole home as part of a double steal, with senior center fielder Sam George (Eau Claire, WI/N.M. Military Institute) stealing second on the play.

A double play ended the threat with George at third and junior first baseman Jeff Thibodeaux (Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College) at second. TAMUK’s scored single runs in the first and third innings. Catcher Ferdinand Rosa, who went 2 for 3, was the only player for either team to record two hits during the game.

In the second game, ENMU scored 3 runs in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead, but the Javelinas scored a pair of runs in the third stanza to earn the win. ENMU relief pitcher Tim King (So., RHP, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) entered the game with no outs in the third and shut out the Javelinas the rest of the way (an inherited runner scored the go-ahead run on a ground out). He allowed just 1 hit and recorded 3 strikeouts.

Heredia hit another double for the Greyhounds in the nightcap. The two-base hit drove in ENMU’s final two runs in the 3-run second inning. Senior shortstop Loren Wood (Everett, WA/ Skajit Valley C.C.) scored the other run on a sacrifice fly by Leal (DH in second game).

Kingsville’s winning run was scored by Matt Pesek in the third inning, when Bobby Lara grounded out to shortstop for the second out. The Javelinas tied the game at 3-3 earlier in the inning on a run by Scott Smith, who went 2 for 2 in the game and scored 2 runs.

The teams are scheduled to play another double-header on Saturday (Apr. 17). The first pitch in the opening game is set for 11:00 a.m. (MST).
