TARYLL BOXTON SCORES TWICE
AS GREEN TEAM DEFEATS SILVER TEAM, 14-12
PORTALES, NM First-year redshirt running back Taryll Boxton (Albuquerque, NM/ Del Norte H.S.) caught two touchdown passes, leading the Green Team to a 14-12 victory over the Silver Team in the annual Green vs. Silver Spring Game at Greyhound Stadium, Apr. 17.

Boxton scored on a 43-yard pass from freshman quarterback Mike MacCallum (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) and on a 36-yard pass from junior quarterback Bobby Rodriguez (Santa Teresa, NM/Las Cruces H.S.). Boxton gained 119 yards on 4 pass receptions and added 36 yards on 6 rushing attempts. His 155 yards accounted for more than half of the Green Team’s 260 total yards.

The Silver Team took a 6-0 lead when freshman free safety Waylon Mayfield (Andrews, TX/ Andrews H.S.) intercepted a pass and returned it 81 yards to the end zone. Mayfield also attempted the extra point, but his kick was no good. Boxton’s first touchdown — the 43-yarder from MacCallum — came with 3:31 left in the first half and completed a 4-play, 68-yard drive for the Green.

Freshman placekicker Jeff Wareing (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo H.S.) kicked the extra point, giving the Green Team a 7-6 lead.

The Green increased its lead to 14-6 with 8:21 left in the third period. Boxton’s second touchdown concluded a 4-play, 48-yard drive. Wareing kicked the extra point. Junior running back Terrance Smith (Miami, FL/U. of Tennessee-Martin) scored for the Silver Team on a 14-yard run came at the 1:47 mark of the third quarter. His TD run ended a 6-play, 77-yard drive that lasted just 2:36.

MacCallum’s extra point pass just missed in the deep left corner of the end zone, leaving the Green Team in front 14-12.

ENMU’s Green outgained the Silver 260 yards to 108 yards. Junior fullback Bruce Hatch (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) of the Green Team led all rushers with 78 yards on 17 carries. Freshman Jonathan Hix (FB, Aledo, TX/Aledo H.S.) led the Silver Team with 28 yards on 7 carries.

Rodriguez was 8 of 15 for 110 yards and 1 interception passing for the Green Team. MacCallum completed 2 of 3 passes for 71 yards for the Green squad and completed 3 of 4 passes for 70 yards for the Silver Team. The Green defense limited the Silver Team to 38 rushing yards on 28 carries. The Silver Team held the Green offense to 79 rushing yards on 40 carries. The Silver Team recorded 6 quarterback sacks for 44 yards lost, while the Green Team finished with 5 QB sacks for 41 yards lost.

Mayfield led all defenders with 10 tackles (7 solo, 3 assists) for the Silver Team. Garett Williams (Jr., LB, Monahans, TX/Monahans H.S.) and John Williams (Jr., DT, Earth, TX/Springlake-Earth H.S.) topped the Green Team with 7 tackles each (4 solo, 3 assists).

Green strong safety Quincy Scott (So., Seaside, CA/Monterrey Peninsula C.C.) led all players with 4 sacks for 26 yards in losses.

The ENMU Greyhounds open the 1999 season on Sat., Sept. 4 at Western New Mexico University. Game time in Silver City, N.M. is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST). Last year, Eastern finished the year at 8-3, including 6-3 in the Lone Star Conference South Division (3rd place tie).
