ZIAS SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER WITH WNMU
PORTALES, NM -- Freshman Rachel Mohler (3B/1B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) scored one run and drove in the other, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Western New Mexico University, 2-1, in the second game of a double-header at Zia Softball Field, Apr. 17. WNMU, which won the opener 6-4, is now 30-20 on the season. ENMU is 14-23.

The Zias started the second game by scoring two runs in the first inning. Sophomore center fielder Kim Paschall (Midland, TX/Midland H.S.), who led off the inning, reached first base on an infield single and stole second base. Mohler drove Paschall home with a one-out double to center field. Mohler later scored on a single by junior second baseman Enida Rosales (Glendale, AZ/ South Mountain College). Western New Mexico cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth inning. Celina Estrada singled and eventually scored on a double by Sarah Wyss. The Mustangs put runners at first and second in the seventh inning, but a line drive to second base ended the game with a double play.

ENMU pitcher Tracy Hooker (Fr., Fort Worth, TX/Lawrence D. Bell H.S.) earned a complete- game victory to even her record at 8-8. She gave up 7 hits, recorded 1 strikeout, and allowed no walks.

In the first game, the Zias built a 4-0 lead over the first three innings. Paschall and Mohler both scored in the first inning. In the third stanza, Suzy Seitzinger hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Mohler batted next, and also hit a home run to left.

The Mustangs rallied with a run in the fifth inning and five runs in the seventh. Maricela Sanchez singled and scored the fifth-inning run. Michelle Manning earned the RBI. WNMU’s seventh inning began with four consecutive walks to produce a run. The Mustangs scored another run on a single by Adriana Carbajal, then recorded the tying run on a ground out by Holly Justice.

WNMU moved in front on a 2-RBI single by Diana Leon. Justice improved to 14-10 with the win. She limited ENMU to 5 hits, while the Mustangs totaled 9 hits in the game. Wyss and Nickol Lane doubled for WNMU. Mohler was 2 for 3 with 2 runs and an RBI for Eastern.

The Zias conclude their third season of intercollegiate softball with Lone Star Conference double-headers at Texas Woman’s University on Fri., Apr. 23 and on Sat., Apr. 24. Both double-headers are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. (MST).
