ENMU DEFEATS WASHBURN
AND MIDWESTERN ST.
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team, ranked #25 in NCAA Division II, defeated 22nd-ranked Washburn University, 5-2, and downed 34th-ranked Midwestern State University, 5-0, on the final day of the Broncho Invitational at the University of Central Oklahoma.

With the victories, ENMU took 5th place at the 14-team tournament. Eastern New Mexico is now 19-6 on the season. The Zias are likely to qualify for an NCAA Regional Tournament for the third consecutive year. Regional pairings will be announced April 28.

The Zias’ top singles player Layla Turner (Fr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) won both of her singles matches, defeating Marissa Moment of Washburn, 6-1, 6-3, and shutting out Marci Matthews of Midwestern State, 6-0, 6-0.

Turner and #1 doubles partner Julie Stiles (Jr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) easily downed Washburn’s team of Moment and Misty Nigh, 8-2, and also routed MSU’s Matthews and Nadine Plattek, 8-1.

ENMU returns to Central Oklahoma Apr. 23-25 for the Lone Star Conference Team Tournament. All 14 women’s tennis teams at LSC member institutions will compete.
