PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University has signed three more players to National Letters-of-Intent to play women’s soccer for the Zias, giving ENMU a total of five players signed this spring. The new players are defender Megan Wonner from Coronado High School in El Paso, Texas, Elizabeth Anguiano, a defender from Cochise College, and midfielder Erin Scott, from Greenwood High School in Midland, Texas.

Wonner has played four seasons of soccer at Coronado HS. She recorded 250 steals on defense in 2003-04, after earning 200 steals in 2002-03. She scored one goal and one assist both years, and is concluding her senior season this spring, although she currently is sidelined with an ankle injury.

“Megan is a player that Coach Carlos Elizondo (ENMU men’s soccer coach) recommended from El Paso,” Head Coach Travis McCorkle said. “She has good athleticism and technical ability, which will allow her to play either defender or midfielder for us. I know Megan is excited to move on to the college level, and we are glad to have her on our team.”

Anguiano will receive an associate’s degree in Education this spring at Cochise. She played two seasons for the Lady Apaches. In high school, she earned Honorable Mention All-District honors twice and was team MVP as a senior at Montwood High School in El Paso, Texas.

“Liz is a transfer from Cochise College, which continues to provide us with quality student-athletes,” McCorkle said. “Liz is a defender, who adds hard tackling and intensity. I’m sure she will make a quick transition to our defensive system, and will contribute to a defense that showed a dramatic improvement in 2004.”

Scott plays for the Mirage and Alliance ‘86 club team in Midland. Greenwood HS does not field a high school girls’ soccer team. She has been playing with Mirage and Alliance since 1999. At GHS, she has participated volleyball, track and cheerleading.

“Erin is a very fast midfielder from Midland, Texas,” McCorkle noted. “I think her speed and work rate can wear out opposing tams. Erin plays for a very good club team in Midland that competes against some of the best teams in Texas. Her experience there will help her make a smooth transition to soccer at Eastern.”

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team completed its second season of intercollegiate competition in the Lone Star Conference this past fall. The Zias finished the 2004 season with a 9-9-2 overall record and went 2-5-2 in the LSC standings (8 points) to fall just one point shy of making the conference tournament.
